At Switch Direction, we believe great organisations don’t just happen—they’re built, nurtured, and constantly evolving. In our last blog, How to Successfully Introduce Investors in People, we explored how accreditation is more than a badge—it’s a meaningful signal of commitment to the people who make your organisation thrive.
This week, we’re taking that vision further: how do you actually raise standards in your workplace in ways that resonate with your team, reflect your values, and get results?
Start with Purpose, Not Just Policy
Improving standards isn’t about implementing rigid rulebooks—it’s about instilling a shared sense of purpose. That begins with clear values, consistent leadership, and conversations that matter. Are your people truly aligned with the direction you’re heading, or are they just clocking in?
Use tools like 360° feedback and employee listening strategies to surface what really matters. You’ll be surprised how often the most powerful improvements come from ideas already inside your walls.
Build on What You’ve Started
If you’ve begun the Investors in People journey, you’ve already laid strong foundations. Now, build momentum:
- Use IIP insights: Analyse your assessment feedback and turn learnings into action.
- Make it visible: Celebrate achievements publicly. Showcase how standards are improving and who’s leading the charge.
- Keep evolving: IIP isn’t a one-off—it’s a continual growth mindset. Embed that in your culture.
Develop, Don’t Just Train
Training has its place, but genuine development is broader, deeper and more personal. Offer access to coaching, mentoring, shadowing, and cross-functional projects that stretch people beyond their day job.
Empower individuals to own their growth—and reward them for doing so.
Psychological Safety Isn’t Just a Buzzword
Want high standards? Then make it safe to speak up, challenge ideas and fail forward. Teams perform best when they feel trusted. That starts with leaders modelling vulnerability, encouraging constructive conflict, and embracing the messy middle of change.
Create spaces—real or virtual—where innovation isn’t a risk, but a routine.
Measure What Matters (and Skip the Fluff)
KPIs and metrics are essential, but don’t drown in data. Focus on indicators that reflect people, purpose and performance. Think:
- Engagement scores, retention, and internal mobility
- Quality of internal communications
- Alignment between daily work and long-term goals
Take the Next Step
Improving workplace standards is a journey, not a destination—and it needs to be people-powered. Whether you’re chasing excellence, accreditation, or just looking to do better than yesterday, remember: the best standards are the ones co-created with your team.
And if you’re ready to take it further, let’s talk. Because when you Switch Direction, you unlock potential you never knew was there.
